Social activity: Having an active social life improves our well-being. Getting together with friends, going out with a partner, enjoying family… These are actions that we should encourage in our free time to encourage mental state, as social isolation can lead to dementia and an accelerated decline in mental capabilities.

Hygiene: Establishing hygiene guidelines both at home and on a personal level will prevent us from suffering from illnesses such as infections or dermatological problems. Likewise, reducing exposure to toxic products will reduce the possibility of having health problems.

Balanced diet: Eating a healthy diet does not mean having to deprive oneself of certain foods, but rather of eating them to the right extent. All the foods that are part of the food pyramid must be present in our diet, only some to a greater extent than others. For example, protein should not make up more than 10% of our diet and sugars should not make up more than 5%.

Bad habits: Alcohol, tobacco and drugs have a harmful function on the body difficult to counteract, so it is very important to stay away from these toxic habits. In the case of alcohol, the daily consumption of a glass of wine or beer is recommended.

False myths about healthy living.

Over time, many healthy lifestyle guidelines have become popular, which are considered true when in fact they are not. Tricks like drinking two liters of water a day or sweating a lot to burn more calories are false beliefs that most of us think work. Some of the most widespread myths among the population are the following:

Gluten-free food is slimming: Among many celebrities and athletes has become popular the ‘gluten-free diet’ consisting of eating gluten-free foods. However, there is no scientific proof that they have slimming properties. What’s more, they contain calories that do not encourage weight loss at all. Gluten-free foods are only advisable for coeliacs who see the symptoms of the ailment diminished.

Sweating eliminates toxins and slimming: The function of sweating is to maintain body temperature. Nothing has to do with weight loss or toxin elimination, although there is some truth in the latter since when we exercise we eliminate 1% of the toxins in the body. Drinking 2 liters of water a day is positive: The intake of water a day depends on each person and their lifestyle. There is no scientific proof that drinking two litres a day is healthy for the body. Athletes will probably need more than two litres a day, while those on foot who hydrate regularly will have enough.

Pilates lengthens muscles: It is impossible for the muscles to lengthen with the practice of sport, this is only possible through surgery. One thing is the feeling of lightness and flexibility that we can feel after the practice of sports such as Pilates or yoga, and quite another that the muscles thin and stretch because of this.

In short, there is no secret to a healthy lifestyle simply follow the guidelines recommended by the WHO and limit yourself to living.
